Native Led Convening - Panel Discussion: Perspectives on Washington State Tribes Exclusion from Conservation Futures

  • Bethaday Learning Space 605 Southwest 108th Street Seattle, Washington, 98146 United States (map)

Come learn more about this issue from Native leaders!

Right now, Tribes are excluded from accessing Conservation Futures. Come and learn about this important issue, and learn about ways you can get involved to create change.

In Washington state, a "Conservation Futures" program allows counties to levy a small property tax (up to 6.25 cents per $1,000 of assessed value) to acquire and protect open spaces, farms, forests, shorelines, and other valuable lands. Currently 14 counties are using this funding tool. Click here to learn more. This exclusion is out of alignment with tribal sovereignty, environmental justice, and the reality that Tribes are some of the strongest land stewards in the state.

Why This Matters:
Tribes are already leading essential work in land protection, conservation, habitat restoration, food sovereignty, and cultural revitalization. Allowing Tribes access to this fund expands conservation impact statewide and ensures resources reach the communities most connected to the land.

About the Organizers

This campaign is being organized through a collaborative effort led by The Common Acre, Old Growth Solutions, and Rising Tides Indigenous planning group. In addition, in partnership with tribal representatives, organizers, and advocates committed to Indigenous land return and access to public funding mechanisms. Together, we are working to ensure Tribes are recognized as rightful stewards of their ancestral lands and have equal access to tools and resources to support their ongoing land-based work.
